How to Get Rid of a Shower Drain Smell

October 25, 2022

A clogged bathroom drain is a nuisance, especially if it happens frequently. When a clogged pipe causes the shower drain to stink, it must be dealt with immediately. Most shower drain odor and blockage problems are easy to fix if you know how to clean your shower drain properly. The top five causes of a smelly shower:

1. The shower strainer/drain pipe is blocked

2. Mold or Mildew

3. Poor ventilation of drains

4. Leaky pipes

1-The shower strainer/drain pipe is blocked

First, the amount of tiny debris in your shower strainer that causes clogging is a major cause of smelly shower drains. All that accumulated hair, soap residue, dirt, grime, etc. starts to smell. So how to get rid of the bathroom drain odor?

To quickly remove a dirty clogged shower drain, use a mixture of vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. Pour half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar down the drain. Then cover the drain and wait 15 minutes. After that pour boiling water down the drain to clean it up. Besides, you can use a plunger to remove debris, or you can use a chemical cleaner specifically designed for drains.

2-Mold or Mildew

The next most common but dangerous cause is mold growth in the shower. If your shower drain smells musty, it's probably because your shower drain is poorly ventilated and moisture is getting into it. Without water, neither mold or mildew is in danger of growing. In addition to looking for direct signs of mold and mildew in your shower drain, you should also check for signs of water damage.

How to remove mold and mildew? If you see mold or mildew in the shower, you should wash it immediately with bleach or detergent. If you have a lot of mold in your bathroom, you may need to contact a professional to deal with the problem. If you choose to clean yourself, make sure to work in a well-ventilated environment and use gloves and a mask to protect yourself from mold spores to remove the smell of shower drains.

3-The drainpipe is poorly ventilated

Third, another reason for smelly bathroom drains is a poor ventilation system. When your drains are poorly ventilated, it can cause sewer gases to build up and escape into your bathroom. If you notice the problem, you should call a plumber immediately. In addition, damp conditions can cause mold to grow. Adequate ventilation keeps air flowing through the room and also removes moisture that contributes to mold.

How to fix a smelly shower drain? Open the window when taking a shower or turning on an exhaust fan to suck away steam. Shutters are installed where steam rises, which ventilate the bathroom.

4 - Leaky pipes

In the case of a broken sewer line, the odor will be stronger than a blocked exhaust vent or mold buildup. It can allow water to seep into your walls or floors, again causing mold or mildew to grow. If you notice that your kitchen, Bathroom Sink, shower, or any other area connected to a pipe gives off a sewer odor, you can be relatively confident that your sewer line is broken.

How to Clean bathroom Drain Odor? If you think your pipes may be leaking, the first thing to do is call a plumber and let them know about the situation so they can fix the problem.
